The project was launched on September 19, 2021 by the co-founders SoggyApplePie and bantano, both are core team members of the cryptocurrency project Banano. Another member, Vyryn, joined the core team as coder-in-chief. According to the creators, the vision behind the project is to create a collectible digital trading card series that they themselves would like to collect. The focus of the CryptomonKeys project is to build a fun community, within an educational and welcoming atmosphere.[4]

monKeyfarm[edit | edit source | hide]
The monKeyfarm concept was originally announced on 21 October 2020.[7] The basic idea is that holders of cryptomonKeys cards have a chance to receive new card drops automatically for each new card received, in perpetuity. The chances to receive monKeydrops will be higher for the ‘Legacy’ Generation 1 cards 1-19. Chances will also be higher when holders possess a bigger variety of different cards, and for holders of rarer cards. On average, 19% of all new cards will be distributed this way to reward early adopters and avid collectors. CryptomonKeys core team members are excluded from receiving monKeyfarm drops. Each monKeyfarm event is documented.[8]
